The Ghorepani trek offers a wonderful opportunity to witness the beauty of the Annapurna region on a short trek. The trek passes through charming Gurung and Magar villages, dense rhododendron forests, bird-filled oak forests, green hills and patchwork valleys with stunning views of Machapuchare (6,993m), the Annapurna (8,091m) and Dhaulagiri (8,167) ranges. From Poon Hill we can see the mountains in the red and pink tones of sunrise. This is a rewarding tea-house trek that can be enjoyed by almost anybody.
This trek can be done any time, though we would advise against it during the monsoon, June to late September.
Day 1 | Kathmandu to Pokhara (910m) Your trekking guide arrives and, after breakfast, we travel from Kathmandu to the vibrant resort area of Lakeside, Pokhara, from where we can observe views to the north across the hills to the white peaks of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, go boating on Fewa Lake or just wander around. (6/8 hour drive or 30 minute flight) |
Day 2 | Pokhara to Tirkhe Dhunga (1,495m) After breakfast we drive to Nayapul, from here we trek for about 20 minutes to Birethanti, a prosperous town beside the Modi Khola River, and then hike on to the large Magar village of Ulleri. From Ulleri the trek crosses a stream and we hike up some steps. (1 hour drive and 3 to 4 hours trekking). |
Day 3 | Tirkhe Dhunga to Ghorepani (2,850m) After hiking across a stream (Bhurungdi Khola) via a suspension bridge the trek climbs gently through pastures, cultivated fields, rhododendron and oak forests to Nangethanti, where we have lunch and a short rest, before trekking through more forest to Ghorepani. (5 to 6 hour trek). |
Day 4 | Ghorepani via Poon Hill (3,195m) to Tadapani (2,520m) After an early start at around 4 am we trek up Poon Hill (3,210m), this is a steep 1 hour hike and leads to a brilliant viewpoint with an unobstructed sunrise over the High Himalaya. After spending about 40 minutes on the hillside, with a hot cup of coffee or tea, we hike down to Ghorepani for breakfast. From here the trek climbs along ridges and through pine and rhododendron forests to Deurali. We trek down to Banthanti before winding our way to Tadapani. (6 hour trek). |
Day 5 | Tadapani to Ghandruk (1,950m) After a 4 hour trek we descend to Ghandruk, a wonderful Gurung village with traditional houses made of stone slabs. The magnificent views from here include Annapurna South (7,229m), Hiunchuli (6,441m), Annapurna III (7,755m), Glacier Dome (7,200m) and Machapuchare (6,993m). (4 hour trek). |
Day 6 | Ghandruk via Birethanti and Nayapul to Pokhara (1,910m) Today we hike down through Kimshe to Shaulo Bazaar. From here the trek flattens out until Birethanti. We drive from Nayapul to Pokhara by taxi. (4 to 5 hour trek and 1 hour drive). |
Day 7 | Pokhara to Kathmandu We return to Kathmandu, though alternatively you could take the opportunity to paraglide near Pokhara with or without an instructor. Tandem flights cost from US$ 95 to US$ 30.
